I started my anaesthetic training in 1993 in Norwich before joining a registrar rotation in London. Post Fellowship training was undertaken in the East Anglian Region and at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London. I have been a consultant anaesthetist since 2000.

Phil Hodgson graduated from St Bartholomew's Hospital London in 1986 and subsequently trained in most of the teaching hospitals and specialist centres in London between then and his Consultant Appointment in Norwich in 1996. His training included over two years at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Although experienced in all areas of Anaesthesia, he has sub-specialty interests in Paediatric/Neonatal Anaesthesia and Anaesthesia for Emergency Surgery. He also has interests in both Teaching and Training and is a senior examiner for The Royal College of Anaesthetists.

Outside interests include playing lead guitar in a local rock band, supporting Newcastle United and jogging in a largely futile attempt to keep fit.

Dr Michael Hudspith - PhD FRCA FFPMRCA

Mike Hudspith trained in Pharmacology and Anaesthesia in London and Cambridge, before undertaking higher training in Pain Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital Sydney. Dr Hudspith has been a Consultant in anaesthesia and pain medicine in Norwich since 1999 and is experienced in interventional and non-interventional management of chronic pain as well as general and regional anaesthesia.

Dr Paul Hutchings - MBBS FRCA

Paul Hutchings qualified at Guys Hospital, London and spent time in training posts in Jersey, Plymouth, Sheffield, Groningen-Netherlands and Birmingham before taking up a consultant position in Norwich and membership of Norwich Anaesthetists Group in 1991. I have a special interest in training doctors and nurses in resuscitation as an Instructor for the UK Resuscitation Council. I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer at UEA medical school. My special interests within anaesthesia are in ENT and Maxillofacial anaesthesia and associated difficult airway problems, and the use of local anaesthesia to facilitate good pain relief in all types of surgery.

Jurgens Nortje trained in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine in Cambridge and Norwich. He has been a member of the Norfolk & Norwich anaesthetic department and Norwich Anaesthetists Group since 2007.

Dr Gwenda Porter - MB BS FRCA FFPMRCA

Gwen Porter was born in Manchester and trained at Newcastle university. After post-graduate training posts in UK, she spent some time working as a fellow in Toronto and Montreal, returning to Norwich in 1987. In 1989 she set up one of the first acute pain services in UK here in Norwich. Dr Porter has specialist interests in anaesthesia and pain management in children and in the management of face pain and headaches.

Dr Nicholas Woodall - MB ChB FRCA

Nick Woodall joined the Norwich Anaesthetists Group in 1991 after 9 years of anaesthesia training in Liverpool, London and the US and recently returned from a sabbatical in New Zealand. Nick has extensive experience in all areas of anaesthetic practice and has a special or research interest in vascular, plastics, thoracic, head, neck and airway problems. Along with Rob Harwood and Graham Barker (also NAG partners), Nick developed the Norwich endoscopic airway training course as a unique method of training in airway management.

Away from the operating theatres he enjoys skiing with his family, running, reading and is a secret cyclist. Nick previously cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats and back again to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Campaign. He completed a 120 mile stage of the Tour de France through the Pyrenees and followed this in 2013 by riding the whole route of the Tour de France one week ahead of the professionals, to raise money for the William Wates Memorial Trust.
