Dr Mark Dixon

Mark is a Consultant Anaesthetist with subspecialist interest in regional anaesthesia. Regional anaesthesia involves the use of local anaesthetic drugs to block nerve function for a period of time. This may be for pain free recovery after surgery or, for those patients who don't want to have a general anaesthetic, to allow surgery to be performed awake. It is most often used in orthopaedic surgery, but also in other types of surgery including plastic surgery and abdominal surgery.

After his medical school training Mark spent two years as a medical officer with the British Antarctic Survey. He then began his anaesthetic training with two years in Norwich, he then spent 5 years based in Cambridge doing specialist training. After completing his training he took a subspecialist fellowship in Amsterdam. Mark started as a Consultant in Norwich in 2004.

Dr Bruce Fleming - MBChB, FRCA

I graduated in Medicine at the University of Cape Town in 1982 and came to the UK in 1986. I commenced training in Anaesthesia in Chichester, before moving to Brighton and then Norwich, for Registrar training, in 1989.

I gained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) in 1991, before commencing a 12 month Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia at Papworth Hospital. I returned to Norwich as Senior Registrar in 1992 and completed training in May 1995, the final 12 months of which, were spent at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. During this period, I was appointed Consultant in Anaesthesia at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, commencing in June 1995. I became a partner of the Norwich Anaesthetists Group at that time.

My practice comprises anaesthesia for a range of major to minor surgery, with a focus on colorectal, ENT and maxillofacial surgery, the latter requiring the application of techniques facilitating the management of the difficult airway. Prior to 2015, the majority of my practice was committed to Intensive Care.

Aside from the clinical role, my interests were focused on education and training. I organised the annual Norwich Anaesthetic Study Day from 1996-2000, served as College Tutor from 2000-2004 and as a College Examiner for the FRCA Examination from 2005-2015.

My interests outside of work mostly revolve around sport (as an invariably frustrated tennis player, and a keen follower of a range of others), sailing for leisure (a Wayfarer on the Broads) and aviation, having been a learner pilot once upon a time. Walking with our elderly Labrador has recently become a more significant feature of life - and a regular delight!
